"Issuing an update to XP would represent a significant shift for the software maker, which for months has insisted that it had no plans to create a separate version of Windows before Longhorn. A company executive confirmed to CNET News.com on Thursday that Microsoft is now discussing a product internally referred to as "Windows XP Reloaded."
Delaying Longhorn could further benefit Linux, considered the chief threat to the dominance of Windows, said RedMonk analyst Stephen O'Grady.
"With any delay of Longhorn, Linux desktop advocates have potentially gained an extension to the window for getting their respective offerings established within enterprises," O'Grady said. Already, analysts had cautioned that the long time frame between Windows XP's debut and the arrival of Longhorn represented perhaps the best opportunity for Linux to make headway on the desktop.
Time to take look at Linux?? Read more....
Longhorn presents some other mega problems for Microsoft: namely, their new WinFS unified file structure is such a radical departure from the past that corporate IT departments aren't going to want to touch it with a 10-foot pole for a couple of years. So while it may hit consumers in 2005 and 2006, I would be surprised to see any significant corporate rollouts until 2007 at the earliest.
As for this consumer, WinFS has DRM built into the very fabric of it's being. Trustworthy computing? Maybe for Hollywood, but not for you. I'll take a pass, thanks.

Thanks for stopping by ;-)
Go Linux! I have been less than impressed with much that Microsoft has done lately. It is not hard to find a suitable replacement for any product Microsoft makes, even to run on their own OS. I have not used Microsoft's Browser or Email programs for over a year now and I can hardly say I miss them.
Oh, and OpenOffice.org as Chartoo and I chatted about a month or so ago is certainly everything you need in an office application. :)
